About Reading Roars!

Reading Roars! is a web log (”blog”), launched in July 2005, about Reading. That is, Reading the town in the South East of England, rather than the sedate information-gathering activity.

According to Dictionary.com, a blog is:

a personal Web site that provides updated headlines and news articles of other sites that are of interest to the user, also may include journal entries, commentaries and recommendations compiled by the user

I started the blog because I felt that Reading was becoming an increasingly important and exciting town, commercially and culturally (for example: The Oracle was developed, establishing Reading as a strong retail destination; new business parks and bars were opened; and Reading Football Club made giant strides forward) and I wanted to personally, and positively, comment on this (especially as the town is sometimes viewed indifferently or negatively).

Reading is not a perfect, nor even a pretty, town, but we have much to be proud of.

The blog name, Reading Roars!, may seem unusual. I chose it for 3 reasons:

  • The Forbury Lion is an unoffical symbol of the town, and a lion roars (though the Forbury one is a statue)
  • Reading is the roaring hub of the Thames Valley
  • Alliteration!
