My favourite romantic things to do in Reading include 1. going for coffee at Carluccios, 2. walking to Sonning Lock along the Thames, 3. difficult to beat a pint at The Hop Leaf, if you just fancied a quiet table, a nice little chat and a decent pint of tasty ale, 4. walking all around Mapledurham and Pangbourne (lovely spots!) and 5. heading out towards barn acre gallery for a little bit of culture.

I also love the Oakford for 6. dancing together, and I think Speech Debelle at play studios on 19th is going to be a good gig for taking a loved-one too. She's lofi and the queen of the heartful confession, so I'm hoping this too will be a little bit rosemantic for 7. enjoying some beautiful music together.

For the one romantic, single, unavailable, un-food-centric person in Reading there is this event in the evening
Steven Isserlis, playing Cello at the concert hall . There's a free pre-concert talk http://www.readingarts.com/concerthall/whatson/event.asp?id=SX7FF0-A7819525

During the day I could have a floating sensation: http://www.floatingsensations.co.uk/

Hi Anonymous, several days ago, I was in Bangkok. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing city in the world (there is a lot of concrete). But what a cracking place!

I think what makes the Thai capital special is a couple of things, mainly: fascinating attractions such as markets and temples "hidden" deep within the concrete quagmire, and the city's residents (who make Bangkok buzz).

Like Bangkok, Reading is not wholly pleasing to the eye (the concrete IDR is very ugly, for example). But look deeper and you will find pockets of beauty such as the Forbury Gardens and The Forbury Hotel, the pretty St Mary's Church and the calming waters of the Thames by Caversham Bridge.

We're fortunate in having good transport links to London (itself not entirely attractive, let's be honest), agreed.

Hi ANon e-mouse, yes, there is art in Reading! Here are some examples of local venues where you can find it:

- Jelly, displaying works from local artists: http://thejelly.wordpress.com/about/a-little-bit-about-us/
- Moondog Art Stop Cafe, a coffee shop and art gallery: moondogcafe.co.uk
- Global Cafe: http://www.risc.org.uk/arts/
- South Street Arts Centre (performing arts): http://www.readingarts.com/southstreet/
- Rising Sun Arts Centre: http://www.risingsun-artscentre.co.uk/

There is also street art, and art can be studied at local institutions such as the University of Reading.

We will be providing updates on the Reading arts scene very soon :)

Reading is a town which is as attractive as turd on a stick!
The residents like to blame its ugliness on the bombings during the war! This was like 60 years ago, No Excuses!

However there are a few nice places and thank the lord that it has good transport links to London.

I lived in London in 1987 and met two girls from California who had come to Reading for the Festival. Obviously not put off by the fact that it wasn't being held in a city.

Great picture!

I think something similiar is happening or will be happening near Broad St Mall, too.

And it would be nice to have a market there, I remember there was an Italian style market sometime in autumn. Seems like a much nicer location than the excuse of a market behind Broad St Mall.

hmmm this story is pre ripping the shop out and refit. like the new site layout well done. I needed a prompt to remind people to look at this blog and will increase recommendation efforts.

We do things that have a positive impact on our community. But its not a big deal every business (including Coral's betting shops) should thing how they can with any or no effort feedback into their community and give....something. Except Tesco of course who have destroyed traffic flow on Oxford rd, destroyed footfall and generally made it not a nicer place. Well done you tescopoly.

Patricia feel free to come in and chat about promoting your artwork sounds great
