The shrinking station

Reading Station appears to be getting smaller.

Now we have a posh hotdog stand selling bratwursts outside the main entrance and a new Subway upstairs. I’m not sure why the bratwursts are there. It seems like an odd place to put them, but I’m sure someone did their homework. As for the Subway, I hope it doesn’t prove too much of an obstacle during peak hours. I think we need a more spacious railway station - and fast!

  1. The thing that concerns me is how untidy it all looks. The station is the first view of Reading that many visitors get. Over the last 10 years or so the concourse area of the station has become significantly more cluttered and scruffy.

  2. Yep, agreed. It’s scruffy and small. I wish we had a station designed by Calatrava. I wish we had a clock, even. Then again, I don’t think it’s just our station which is a problem. Our rail industry in general is (still) achingly bad, in my opinion. I experienced a number of problems when catching a train from Feltham to Reading last week, including yet another delayed train (a technical fault, apparently). incompetent staff and anti-social behaviour. Things can only get better?

  3. Reading station should be a beacon to the world saying: “Hello, I am Reading Station. CHOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!”

  4. I’m not sure how to answer this one.

  5. Hello
Please may I invite your blog visitors to join my campaign to improve the rail service currently provided by First Great Western? I am giving out badges bearing the phrase “I Hate First Great Western” to try and spread the word to the company that we’re not terribly pleased with the way they’re running things right now. It’s also a place to have a good rant when things go wrong, and find out some fascinating facts about the way the system works, or, rather, doesn’t. And Reading Station is a major part of the problem it seems. Please visit http://www.ihatefirstgreatwestern.blogspot.com.
    Many thanks
